hubbard: i guess context is everything. this commercial was made for and debuted during the coming-out episode of ellen degeneres' sitcom, so while it's technically in the "gay vague" category, it's always seemed overtly gay to me.
I agree, although I would not have used the adjective "overtly" myself. I think it's sweet and gentle and plays right into my tendency to assume whenever I see two guys in a supermarket together to think, "there's another couple."
The first overtly gay commercial on TV would have been for anything Paul Lynde was selling.

I see them do it all the time at Bed Bath and Bendover/ Beyond and I still don't get it.
