update: i've just been told that i'm the only one who understands that this post was about a kid i had chatted with for five minutes assuring me that he didn't expect me to give him a whole car, but merely a down payment, in exchange for which he would be my friend forever, or at least a week. guess you had to be there.

I do remember that "old hustler friend" -- who seemed to drop off the face of the world shortly thereafter.
Haven't been able to locate him since.
I guess if I was 18 years old and poor but with a sense of entitlement, I would demand money from people who had it.
Instead, I was 18 and in school and just didn't go out much. I very much enjoyed those times because we made the most of them.
As for your 18 year old friend. I do hope he comes up with a little bit more realistic expectations of how our capitalist economy functions. Of course, if Obama and the Democrats have their way and impose a socialist economy, he will have that convertible in not time (from each according to his abilities to each according to his desires?) -- just kidding, just kidding. Some people are unable to detect irony.
Actually, I read English pretty well and have a functioning sense of irony, so I "got it" from both of you. What I don't get is why he's shooting for just the down payment. Makes it seem like he's marked himself down because he lacks confidence that he's worth the whole car.
On the other hand. if he doesn't realize that he's going to have to give up ass in this bargain, perhaps the down payment is all he's worth.
