I sympathize afresh with the mighty Voltaire, who, when badgered on his deathbed and urged to renounce the devil, murmured that this was no time to be making enemies.

Well, I suppose you are a kindred spirit to Mr. Hitchens. Hitchens, was, however, a contrarian to the nth degree. He took it to the extreme in such a way that he had no ideological kinship with anyone.
Of course, when he burned bridges, he made sure to do a good job. Generally, he was known for incinerating them.
Yet he is actually being remembered with some genuine appreciation and respect by a wide variety of commentators. Doubtless in the Bible Belt they're having cake and congratulating each other on his demise.

Lessons to live by.
