a brief fashion moment

.
the only enduring memory i have of the 2008 democratic convention is of michelle obama striding confidently onstage in that blue-green dress, looking sensational.

and saying to my flat-screen, "fuck whatever her dumbass husband says or does--we may have another jackie on our hands."

and then, as subsequent wardrobe atrocities unfolded, being as sorely disappointed in her as the rest of the country was in barack.

most recent case in point:

[sigh]

michelle, honey, i may not know anything about fashion, but lemme give you a little lesson in basic public relations:

we humans are a visually-oriented species--you really wanna get a serious point about your husband's healthcare plan across to america, try not dressing in such a way as to leave your audience with nothing more memorable to talk about once you're done than, "christ, did you get a look at that godawful shit she had on?"

just sayin.

"accessibility to the masses does not a fashion icon make." --me, a few months ago on my space

my father and i had a similar conversation during which i told him i was appalled by the media's proclamation that Obama was a 'fashion icon' (in response to J. Crew selling out of some random sweater the she beast was seen wearing).

:::shrug:::

In 40 years from now, no one will remember that sweater.

It's an insult to even dare to compare Obama to Jackie O.

judi: "she beast"? a tad harsh, don't you think?

i see a definite jackie parallel--while not pretty in the conventional sense, michelle's got that indefinable something that draws the eye, and when she's dressed to kill, she's a knockout.

what she lacks is jackie's perfect pitch in matters of taste and style. shame, that.

[jesus, listen to me--i almost sounded like a real fag there for a minute. guess there's hope yet.]

mikey: no, i'm not being harsh.

have you not seen the picture of carla bruni-sarkozy and michelle obama?

what? no? fashion's not really your thing?

let me enlighten you:

would pit bull have been better?

Judi's right about Michelle Obama's get up next to Bruni -- really not a good thing.

But, really now, do you prefer the pantsuits of Hillary? Hillary at least knows it is a can't win situation for her. She can't be taken seriously and be too stylish.

Big belts and frills do not suit Michelle and a good friend should tell her that...or face you and Judi's wrath some more I suppose.

There have been some real howlers--I remember a black dress with fuzzy-edged red splotches on it. Fritz and I, both with theatrical design in our careers, were agog that anyone would want that dress--or would have allowed her to wear it.

judi: oh, she can look bad, all right--but she can also look damned good.

noblesavage: hillary's a different case--she's short, squat and high-waisted, and uses those pantsuits to camouflage her flaws as much as possible.

will: oh, yeah, the infamous election-night dress--that was my first clue we were in trouble ;)

I was honestly never taken by Obama nor his wifey at all. I mean, it's all very nice and historic and racially cool and all, but whatever.

WE GOT THE FINANCIAL CRISIS THAT IS SLOWLY BUT SURELY BRINGING DOWN THE COUNTRY AND THEY'RE ALL GONNA BE CONCERNED ABOUT MICHELLE'S FASHION?!

WHO CARES?!
