potassium iodide is for pussies, and other thoughts

.

as i sit here sipping my cocktail, gazing seaward, stoically awaiting the arrival of the radiation cloud our overlords insist is harmless and hoping it'll at least be good for a few photogenic sunsets, my fertile mind ranges far and wide over various and sundry issues of the day.

1. concerning the japan catastrophe: there simply are no words, and i sincerely wish more of you idiots with keyboards out there would realize that.

2. concerning the run on radiation pills in the midwest: the tendency of humans to hysterically inject themselves into crises on the other side of the world which have absolutely nothing to do with them personally whilst simultaneously ignoring the threat in their own backyard, i will never understand.  seriously, joe and ethel--you'll get far more radiation from the TSA cancer boxes at o'hare you've passively agreed to step into than you'll ever get from fuckin' fukushima.

3. concerning today's UN security council vote for a de facto libya invasion [and this is really where my thoughts are tonight]:  since our deal with the middle east has always involved protecting oppressive dictatorships in exchange for cheap dollar-denominated oil, and since we now seem to be throwing said oppressive dictators under the bus one after another, i'm wondering how long before the saudis wake up and start shopping around for better protectors [like the chinese and/or russians, for example--both of whom abstained from the libya vote] and we find ourselves up shit creek, crude-wise.

4.  concerning the weak and waffling barack obama:  he's turned out to be precisely the president i expected him to be.

5. concerning possible diversions from all this bullshit:  might i suggest battle:LA.  while it can't hold a candle to independence day, it's a reasonably decent shit-blowing-up movie, and it'll totally clear your palate if you've recently sat through something that left a bad taste in your mouth.
